3M is seeking a Process Research Engineer for the Abrasive System Division (ASD) Laboratory located in Maplewood, MN. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.
The person hired for the position of Process Research Engineer will be responsible for applying expertise in lab scale process experimentation for industrial abrasive applications. The ideal candidate will be an experienced professional with strong capabilities in coating, drying, computer aided design, and experimental process design. We’re looking for a person who is collaborative, a great communicator, has excellent judgement, and can perform in a fast-paced, growing, global division.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Become an integral, contributing team member of the ASD Technology Platform Team
Investigate and develop unique process solutions for new mineral and abrasive making
Build and experiment with prototype lab scale processes to show feasibility for new product concepts
Develop a fundamental understanding of the process parameters that control abrasive performance
Collaborate with manufacturing and manufacturing technology to scale-up new process technology and consult on drying and coating challenges
Coordinate pilot plant and manufacturing experiments
Leverage the 3M Corporate Research Laboratory (CRL) to transfer state-of-the-art process technologies
Apply computer aided design skills to develop new process equipment and support the rest of the team’s design needs
Utilize good communication skills to inspire, influence, motivate, and teach other team members
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university
Combined experience with lab scale process experimentation with coating methods in a private, public, government and/or military environment
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
Strong technical competency in lab scale process experimentation with coating and/or drying methods in a private, public, government or military environment
Basic competency in computer aided design
Experience in polymer extrusion
Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation)
Experience working on both multifunctional and international teams
Microsoft Office proficient
Location: Maplewood, MN
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
Relocation: Is authorized
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without a sponsorship for employment visa status (e.e. H1B status).
