The person hired for the position of Safety Engineer will provide safety engineer/process safety management (PSM) subject matter expertise to the 3M Center facility in Maplewood, MN and 3M Global Research and Development. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of safety engineering, well-developed written and oral communications skills, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. This position has high technical learning potential in an energized team environment.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Safety engineer / process safety management (PSM) subject matter expertise during comprehensive hazard reviews to assess and minimize risks of new and changing processes, equipment, and chemistries
Actively applying engineering/scientific knowledge to EHS regulatory interpretation
Presenting results and providing guidance to several layers of 3M management and employees
Leading incident investigations to determine causal factors and identify associated plans to minimize recurrence
Participates in and/or lead EHS audits and/or self-assessments
Develop and present training packages
Interacting with internal auditors and regulatory agencies
Identifying and recommending actions to minimize the risk of incidents
Managing safety programs, elements, and associated control plans to maintain compliance
Communicating effectively in written and oral forms with peers and others at varying levels within the organization
Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Safety Engineering, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a Science discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
Minimum of two (2) years of combined manufacturing and/or lab experience in Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) in a private, public, government or military environment
Certified Safety Professional or working towards certification
Strong working knowledge and experience with process safety management (PSM)
Experience in managing safety programs / PSM in R&D or manufacturing environment (e.g. management of change, LOTO, machine guarding, incident management, electrical, PIV)
Master’s level degree in one of the following: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene
Experience working with local, state, and federal EHS regulations
Project leadership skills, including ability to develop, plan, and deploy risk-reduction initiatives within the workplace
Knowledge of computer programs and corporate systems relevant to EHS
Strong interpersonal skills with solid written and verbal communication skills
Self-directed, with excellent prioritization and organizational skills
Strong knowledge base and experience with EHS regulatory standards
Experience in facilitating and managing EHS programs
Experience with auditing safety programs and performing workplace inspections
Data analysis, including ability to identify trends, and summarize conclusions
Having the ability to convey the meaning and importance of EHS topics to non-EHS personnel and to influence others to take appropriate action based on such information
Actively seeking to continually improve communication and presentation skills
Location: Maplewood, MN
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
